Things to Do
Raglan Main Beach
Learn to Surf at Ngarunui Beach

Ngarunui Beach is the best spot in Raglan for beginner surfers, especially over summer. For more advanced waves, head to Manu Bay and Whale Bay — both are well-known for their quality surf.

You can also take the gravel Whaanga Coast Road from Manu Bay to Ruapuke Beach. The drive is rough in places but offers great views.

Explore Te Toto Gorge Lookout

Te Toto Gorge, 13.8 km south of Raglan on windy gravel Whaanga Road, is a stunning coastal area on the edge of Mount Karioi, about halfway to Ruapuke Beach. It offers dramatic views of the west coast and the Tasman Sea. The gorge is also rich in Māori history and features terraced gardens and pā remnants that reflect the region’s pre-European settlement.

Hike Mount Karioi Summit

Next to the Te Toto Gorge lookout is the entrance to the Mount Karioi Summit Hike. This is known as the best hike from Raglan where you’ll enjoy sweeping views of the ocean and mountains. Along the trail, you will also see many unique plants and trees native to this area.
While this is a popular hike, a good level of fitness is required for the steep climb. The effort is worth it when you reach the summit though!
Distance: 9.5 km

Rock Climbing, Canyoning & Caving

Raglan is known for its great rock climbing, canyoning (both during the day and at night with glow worms), and even caving!

Kayak the Limestone Coast

From the town centre, you can rent a kayak with Raglan Kayak & Paddleboard. While you’re able to set your own route, one of the best things to do in Raglan is kayaking the limestone coast. Paddle through the clear blue waters to explore the special rock formations. You may even see orca whales at certain times of the year! Pack a small picnic or lunch and enjoy it along the way, as you’ll pass many coves and secret beaches.

Kayak Around the Pancake Rocks

The Pancake Rocks are a natural rock formation made up of several layers of limestone that have been compressed together over millions of years. You can rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboard and explore the Pancake Rocks up close.
There are multiple operators offering kayaks and stand-up paddleboards for rent. A 3-hour guided tour is also available.

Try Mountain Biking at Te Ara Kakäriki Bike Trail

Te Ara Kakariki is a 5-kilometre bike trail suitable for beginners and families. The trails wind through native bush and offer stunning views of the coast. You can bring your own bike or rent one from Raglan Rock. The cost of a bike rental starts at NZ$40 for 2 hours.
